I was on the TransPennine Express from Edinburgh to Manchester recently to deliver a seminar.
The train was busy.
The weather was dreary.
Smiles were few and far between.
A few minutes into the journey, and it was time for the announcement about ticket inspections.
Nothing out of the ordinary there.
Then it was time for the snack trolley announcement.
“We do not take cash.”
“You can only pay by card.”
Nothing unsual.
Then…
“However, cash tips are extremely welcome!”
“I have three children and it is nearly Christmas!”
It was brilliant.
In that moment, the announcer shared a little of their personality and the effect was instant.
People smiled.
Others laughed.
The entire carriage felt lighter.
With a mere 15 words, the entire atmosphere on the train had changed for the better.
And when the trolley went through the train, everyone wanted to buy something and have a chat.
We can all learn from this for our next presentation.
Look through your notes and slides.
Is there a moment where you share something of yourself?
If yes, great.
If no, can you add something in?
It does not need to be much.
A small personal touch can create a powerful connection.
