Perfecting the Pre-Record

Three simple steps to help you master the presentation pre-record.

Never underestimate the importance of perfecting the pre-record.

I saw a ‘video speech’ at a conference a few weeks ago.

The dignitary could not attend the event in-person due to a diary clash, so recorded a video message instead.

You have probably seen many of these in the past.

A lot of them could be better.

Including this one!

The speaker waffled a lot.

It was too long.
He did not sound enthusiastic.
He was holding a random clicker as if he was delivering a PowerPoint presentation.

What should you do if you are in this situation?

Here are three things to consider when working on perfecting the pre-record.

Firstly, think carefully about the exact scenario for the event.

What is the room like?
Where is your video positioned in the programme?
What time of day will it be?

Imagine you are actually at the event as you deliver your message.

Secondly, act as if you are speaking directly to the audience instead of into a vacuum.

Use the word ‘you’ – be more conversational – make it sound like the audience are important to you.

Increase the energy level in your voice.

This energy increase will feel slightly artificial at the time of recording the message.

But it will create a stronger impact when it is played to the final audience.

Thirdly – keep it briefer and simpler than if you were in the room.

Attention can dip swiftly, especially when you are not physically there.

The good news is that most videos of this nature are pretty lame.

So, by following these three simple steps.

You can stand out here even by being semi-decent – on perfecting the pre-record!
