Never forget how important it is to own the screen when presenting virtually.
I saw a Virtual Presentation from a senior leader recently.
Decent content, decent structure, but one major flaw.
Look at the photo above – I have tried to replicate the flaw.
They failed to own the screen.
Many speakers make this same mistake.
You can avoid it easily.
Try these three steps to ensure you own the screen.
Firstly, make sure the height of your camera is the same height as your eye level.
Raise your chair, lower your chair, use some books – do whatever you can to ensure your camera and eye level are exactly the same height.
This gives your best profile.
Secondly, make sure you are in the centre of the screen.
Otherwise, you look unbalanced and it can distract your audience.
Thirdly, get a bit closer to the screen.
A lot of people are too far away and look too small as a result.
Be the main event in your frame.
Conclusion
Do these three things and you will appear better than many speakers online.
The key is getting them right before any of your audience can see you.
Set up a separate Zoom / Teams meeting before the real thing and observe how you appear.
Make the required changes and you will be ready for the real thing.
OWN THE SCREEN.
