Make Your Moment Count

This week I reflect on lessons learnt whilst on my travels…

Never underestimate the need to make your moment count when presenting.

I was in the audience at a business conference in China a few years ago.

It lasted for a full day and there must have been around a dozen speakers.

Five of the speakers bowed towards the audience before starting their remarks.

One speaker got a hearty round of applause for doing this.

Four of the speakers did not get a round of applause.

What was the difference?

The speaker who garnered the applause made a point of stepping away from the podium and bowing.

It was clear to everyone in the room what he was doing.

The other speakers remained behind the podium.

Quite simply, not enough people noticed.

So they did not clap.

The difference, in terms of distance, was around a metre.

The difference, in terms of outcome, was a thousand miles.

There is a wider lesson here for any speaker.

If you are doing something for the benefit of the audience, make absolutely sure they cannot miss it.

Do not simply hope for the best.

Be bold.

And be aware that the larger the audience, the more you need to make it unmistakeable.

Because if they did not notice it, then it did not happen.

Remember to…

Make your moment count.
