A new presentation hazard…

A new hazard to be wary of when giving a presentation – the innocent and unassuming antibacterial hand gel…

I found a new presentation hazard recently.

Antibacterial hand gel – strange you may think.

But let me explain.

I had about two minutes before it was time to start the presentation.

In front me was a container of hand gel.

I gave it an enthusiastic press to get some gel.

Unfortunately the nozzle was slightly blocked as some of the gel had congealed.

So it squirted everywhere, including all over my shirt.

And I mean all over my shirt – what a mess!

Hopefully this does not happen to you.

But if it does, or if a similar issue arises, here are four things to consider.

Firstly, do you think the audience will notice?

(In my case they would notice.)

If you think they will not notice, then carry on as normal.

Do not draw attention to it.

Secondly, can you do anything to ensure they don’t notice?

(I tried putting on a jacket but this only covered part of the stains.)

Take a deep breath and think about what you could do to remove or reduce the issue.

Then, if it works, carry on as normal.

Thirdly, if the above does not work, be upfront with the audience.

Take the initiative and point out the problem.

Don’t make it your opening line though.

Go in there boldly, get their attention and start your delivery with some extra intensity.

Then, relatively early, tell them the issue.

And move on.

By being straight with them, you maximise your chances of them moving on with you.

And finally, and most importantly don’t press the hand gel button too hard!
