I was working with a client in Edinburgh recently. Her preparation had gone well, and we agreed to have one final rehearsal at the actual venue on Queen Street.
On the way in, I noticed a plaque.

Your presentation venue can sometimes provide inspiration you would never find sitting at your desk.
So next time you arrive, don’t rush straight inside with your head down.
Look around.
If you see something interesting and relevant, consider using it.
If your audience noticed it too, you’ve created a shared connection.
If they didn’t, you’ve taught them something new.
Either way, you’ve added value.
Sometimes a few moments spent looking around your presentation venue can give you something your audience will remember long after you’ve finished speaking.
