Why Authentic Engagement Matters in Presentations

Engagement isn’t about asking questions. It’s about responding to what actually happens. Here’s what one presenter got wrong and what a comedian got right.

I saw a presenter recently with a bizarre approach to audience engagement.

He simply ignored them at every turn.

It was like watching a robot perform.

“Is everybody having a good time?”

No response.

“Great – me too – glad to hear it.”

Later, during a detailed segment.

“I can see lots of nodding at this point.”

Nobody was nodding.

“The smiles suggest you know exactly what I mean.”

Nobody was smiling.

He did something similar at least half a dozen times in a 10-15 minute presentation.

On the surface, you might think he was trying to connect.

But audiences are smart.

They know when engagement isn’t authentic.

If you attempt interaction, it is vital that you then observe your audience carefully.

What actually happened?
Was there a verbal response?
Were people nodding or shaking their heads?

Then respond to reality, not what you wish had happened.

A few years ago, I saw a comedian at the Edinburgh Fringe ask the same question in a packed room.

“Are you having a good time?”

Minimal response.

“Great – sounds like about three of you are having a good time!”

The room erupted.

He acknowledged reality and instantly connected with the audience.

Three simple steps:

Step 1: Plan your interaction carefully
Step 2: Observe the reaction
Step 3: Respond to what actually happened

And remember, engagement only works when it’s real.
