Don’t forget this important presenting tip – before the facts, build the interest.
I was at a legal conference a few months back.
Ten legal speakers in total – all good but one really stood out.
Why?
Each speaker was covering a few significant legal cases.
They all knew their material.
They all presented competently.
But most speakers announced the name of the legal case and moved swiftly into the detailed facts of the case.
The standout speaker did something different.
They added some flavour during their opening slide.
Firstly, they gave us some context by explaining what the case was truly about.
Secondly, they told us why it might be of interest to us.
This got our attention.
Then they hooked us in further with the second slide.
They showed a photo of the geographical area that the case centred upon, as well as its location on Google Maps.
The audience were invested in the case BEFORE going into the detailed facts.
By that point, they genuinely wanted to hear the detail.
Now the case was just as complex as every other case, but it did not feel that way.
Learn from this.
The concept applies to all presentations, not just legal ones.
Get the audience interested as early as possible.
Remember…
Before the facts, build the interest.
Focus on this the next time you are speaking.
What can you do to guarantee the audience are with you?
